Favorite Tip Update

Y'all. Lesson learned. Be careful when you use the word "always." I had a photo from a reader yesterday who was changing sheets at her house after she read my post. And there it is...the tag on her fitted sheet is on the bottom left. So let me correct what I said yesterday:

The tag on the fitted sheet is ALMOST ALWAYS on the bottom right.

I will say that I have checked over a dozen sets of sheets, assorted brands, and all of mine really were located on the bottom right. (Except the one odd set where the tag was located in the center but clearly stated which was the top)

So I still think this is a helpful tip. And if you find a set of yours that if different, you  can make a mental note of where the tag is and still use it as a marker.

Thanks to the reader who shared this. Sorry folks for any confusion.  Now we know.

My Favorite Household Tip

We were at the lake again this weekend. And this time I needed to do a little housekeeping. My least favorite household chore is changing the sheets on the bed. I know, I know. I am so thankful to HAVE a bed and sheets, but I still am not a fan of fooling with them

Which brings me to a tip I've shared here before. But I know there are always new readers here and it's doubtful that anyone goes back and reads old posts. And you need to know this.

So here is one of my all-time favorite tips. Forever I tried to buy white or off-white sheets with a woven stripe so that I could tell which way to put the sheets on the bed. Which is the top/bottom. Which are the sides. But I do have a couple of sets that are perfectly plain. So when I use those, it was always trial and error which to lay out the bottom sheet. Mostly it was error. First attempt would be turned the wrong way.

Then I learned a couple of years ago that:

The tag on a fitted sheet ALWAYS goes on the bottom right corner of the mattress.

In the photo above, I am standing at the foot of the bed, looking toward the top. The tag goes on my right side. How easy is that? Glory be!!!  (I do have one set with the tag in the center but it is clearly labeled "top.")

No more spreading the fitted sheet out and then tugging and turning it around the other way. Glory be!!!

We enjoyed a special treat on Saturday afternoon. If you are a Josh Groban fan, you might enjoy the remaining concerts. Go to JoshGroban.com, then go to "tour" to find the info about purchasing a ticket for his live streaming concerts. There are two left—one on Thanksgiving night and one, a holiday program, in mid-December. Next best thing to being in a concert hall. Thanks, Angie, for tell me about this.

We had a cool weekend. I actually got to wear a sweater. Oh, it will be back in the 80s by mid-week but it's nice to have a few days that feel like fall. I love watching early morning fishermen glide by while I'm having my coffee. These three were really bundled up. And I took my coffee back inside where it was warmer.

Have a good week, y'all!

Making Beds The Easier Way

We had the loveliest weekend at the lake. This time, just the two of us. It's wonderful to have every bed full and to have the lake cabin full of grown children and little grandchildren. To have the house filled with voices and laughter. But a quiet weekend for two is a different kind of wonderful.

It was an unexpectedly pleasant weekend when we could enjoy being outside. Usually in July, it's so hot and humid, that staying inside seems the better choice. I loved spending my time on the porch working on a new baby hat.

Daddy-O spent his time on the pier with a fishing rod and reel.

I would meet him there in the late afternoon to compare notes of our lazy day.

And being the very best kind of Daddy-O, he brought me coffee in bed in the mornings.

Before we left, I put clean sheets on the bed. It's ready for the next guests. And that reminded me that I need to share a tip that I learned a few months ago. For years that I dreaded putting on a fitted sheet. More times than not, I had the short end on the wrong corner of the bed. It made this chore take longer. And it aggravated the daylights out of me.

My genius solution to that problem was to buy sheets with woven stripes so that I could tell which way to turn the sheet. Stripes go top to bottom. Easy enough. But not all the sheets I own have those stripes. So with those, it was always "try and hope." I was wrong more times than not.

Then I read a brilliant tip on a blog I enjoy—Everyday Cheapskate. A tip that was in the "how did I not already know this?" category.

Look for the corner seam with the tag. This tag was a few inches away, but it's obvious which seam goes with the tag. Most times the tag is right at the seam.

Then put the corner with the tag on the right hand corner of the bed at the foot. (When you are standing at the foot of the bed looking toward the headboard.) And voila! You've got your fitted sheet turned correctly. No more trial and error!

I've been making beds for many, many years. But this was new to me. I've tried it with an assortment of sheets, new and old, different brands. Some at the lake are really old ones and this works with them, too. After a family week, there are a lot of beds in need of clean sheets. So far this tip has worked every time.

Then when our housekeeping chores were done, we went to brunch on the lake. Brunch with pirates. It was a delicious end to the weekend.

Now we are home, getting ready for Mimi Camp that starts tomorrow. I don't think you'll hear from me again this week. Two little girls in residence for the rest of the week will undoubtably keep us busy. But if we survive (and we will), I'll be back here in a week or so.

Spring Cleaning

There have been very few photo worthy moments in the last week. I have been doing some deep cleaning that was way overdue. So my time in the kitchen has been spent cleaning cabinets fronts instead of cooking.  Daddy-O has been kind enough to treat me to dinner out a couple of times so I didn't have to dirty up pots and pans while I was trying to get things in order. But we can only eat out so much.

Tonight's supper is already in the Crockpot. Good to know I don't have to think about that anymore until supper time. It's one of the easiest recipes I use. And it's always good.

3-PACKET POT ROAST

2-1/2 to 3 lb beef roast (I used a chuck roast)
1 packet Ranch dressing mix
1 packet Italian dressing mix
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 cup water

Place roast in slow cooker. Mix the three seasoning packets with a cup of water. Pour over roast.
Cook on LOW for 8-10 hours. (eta: I cooked mine about 11 hours--it was fall apart tender.)

Now that dinner is taken care of, I can go back to cleaning. So much is done, so much still to do. I have seen this quick furniture fixer pop up multiple times on Pinterest. Does it work? It was so easy that I figured I'd give it a try. And the bedside table was so badly worn that I couldn't make it any worse.

 Before

After

While this mix is certainly no replacement for refinishing, it did help. The places where the finish was completely worn away are still there, but not as obvious. Yes, it looks better than it did. No, it did not completely hide the damage. But for five minutes of effort, I'm happy.

Furniture Fixer

Mix 3/4 cup of cooking oil and 1/4 cup vinegar in a jar with a lid. Shake until thoroughly mixed. Dip a clean rag into mix and wipe over furniture. Wipe off any excess.

I used vegetable oil and cider vinegar. The info I read said you could use distilled or cider vinegar and any kind of cooking oil. Just whatever you have.
